“Metaverse”, “NFT” or “startup” have been (and are still) trending words on the Internet for several months. You’ve definitely heard or read about them, but would you know why these terms are booming? How could we relate them with a child's education? Elba Martínez is a member of one of the newest startups on this, and today she’s telling us about this world and the new e-learning product they’re presenting this June.
Question: Thank you for this interview Elba, I’m so glad you’re here. First of all, could you tell us how it has been for you to be part of such an innovative project? How is it to work on the newest thing that is yet to come?
Answer: It’s incredible to be part of something so new and innovative. It’s like a prize, a benefit I will always keep for myself and my professional future. In the end it is a small company, a start up. There are many like you are starting, with video games for children who learn to do things. It is a way of seeing the future and how it can be developed in methods that are a little more practical or entertaining than going to class with the book.
Q: The definition of metaverse on the Internet is “environment where humans interact as avatars, through a support in cyberspace that acts as a metaphor for the real world, but without the physical or economic limitations imposed there. What is so attractive about the metaverse and why should people start learning about it?
A: The definition is pretty accurate, to begin with. In the end it's like a parallel world. To continue, I think the most special thing is that it creates a parallel universe in which you find yourself immersed. A kind of place where you can do what you want and face new challenges. ours, for example, is about magic: you are a magician who learns to experience challenges with magic...
Q: Why is this so special?
A: Because you see yourself immersed in it and at the same time it is a way of learning. Children don't just play video games without more, there are already thousands and thousands of video games. They learn to play, they learn why what they do is so. That is the difference.
Q: Your product is a video game aimed at children in which they can learn to program by playing. It sounds kind of attractive, what can you tell us about the launch? Why would a child want to play with you?
A: Firstly, because you learn. That is the most essential. In the end, a father will also feel good if, instead of seeing his son spend 12 hours in Clash Royale, he spends them in a video game in which he learns to see life in a different way. In the end, programming as such can have many definitions, like a metaverse, but programming is making your life. By living, you program your life. It’s the same in the game, and I think that this feature among others is essential.
Q: To what extent do you see the metaverse as the future? (Why do you think this is the future of gaming?)
A: I think that everything in a good dose is optimal. If your child plays video games, let the game give him everything that Clash Royale can give him, and also learn. Obviously, this does not become the whole future of the child. It is, indeed, the future, but we must not see it as something that will govern us in the future. We have life before our eyes and yes; it will be implemented in millions of companies when they see that it works.
It's like the moving images at Zara, they've been introduced with progress and now they're normal. It is like that with the metaverse, implanting it in children is good for their learning, but it should not be 100% of their future.
Q: Thank you very much Elba. I'm sure if I had a son I would buy it for him. (laughs)
